Description

A number of neurologic findings can be found in a patient with thallium poisoning.


Central nervous system:

(1) extrapyramidal findings (Parkinsonian tremor, choreoathetosis)

(2) cerebellar degeneration

(3) posterior column dysfunction

(4) cognitive and memory impairment

(5) psychiatric or mood disorders (excessive emotional outbursts, apathy, psychosis, etc)

(6) encephalopathy

 

Peripheral nervous system:

(1) polyneuropathy, motor and/or sensory

(2) autonomic dysfunction

 

Ophthalmologic:

(1) optic neuritis/neuropathy with visual impairment

(2) central scotomata

(3) impaired color discrimination

(4) ptosis

(5) disorders of ocular motility

 

With Prussian Blue therapy many of the neurological deficits may improve over time.
