Mumps may be associated with a wide range of neurological complications.
Neurological complications include:
(1) aseptic meningitis (most common)
(2) encephalitis, including brainstem encephalitis and bilateral hippocampal encephalitis
(3) meningoencephalitis
(4) transverse myelitis
(5) Guillain-Barre syndrome
(6) cerebellar ataxia
(7) facial palsy or other cranial nerve palsy
(8) hydrocephalus
(9) extrapyramidal syndrome
(10) acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM)
(11) behavioral changes
(12) sensory neural hearing loss
(13) peripheral neuropathy
