Chronic exposure to manganese may result in a variety of neurologic signs and symptoms.
Neurologic findings:
(1) decreased libido
(2) nystagmus
(3) disequilibrium
(4) paresthesias
(5) impaired memory
(6) difficulty with fine motor movement
(7) lumbosacral pain
(8) "whispering" speech
Psychiatric findings (locura manganica, manganese madness):
(1) apathy
(2) confusion
(3) bizarre behavior
(4) visual hallucinations
(5) emotional lability
(6) anxiety
(7) insomnia
Urinary symptoms associated with neurologic impairment:
(1) impotence
(2) urgency
(3) incontinence
Parkinson disease like findings:
(1) tremor
(2) ataxia
(3) loss of memory
(4) flat affect
(5) muscle rigidity
(6) gait disturbances
