Description

The net negative charge associated with a serum protein can be estimated based on its concentration and physiochemical features.

net negative charge in mEq/L =

= (serum concentration in g/L) * (buffer value for the protein) * ((pH) – (isoelectric point for the protein))

where:

• The buffer value for most serum proteins is 0.1 mmol per g per unit pH

Interpretation:

• A total serum protein of 7 g/dL at body temperature and pH of 7.4 would have a net negative charge of 12-16 mEq/L.
