Description

A neonate born to a mother who has been abusing the designer drug 4-methylcathinone may develop a withdrawal reactio.


Chemical class: cathinone

Action: stimulant

 

Clinical findings:

(1) jitteriness

(2) irritability

(3) high-pitched cry

(4) hypertonia

(5) brisk reflexes

 

The diagnosis is based on:

(1) maternal history of 4-methylcathinone use during the pregnancy

(2) chemical evidence in maternal hair, meconium or the umbilical cord
