Description

Neonatal acute liver failure (NALF) can be caused by a large number of genetic and nongenetic causes. Identifying the cause is essential for management.


 

Noninfectious, nonendocrine causes:

(1) hepatic tumor

(2) thalassemia

(3) hypoxic ischemic injury

(4) drug

(5) hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytoma

 

Endocrine causes:

(1) growth hormone deficiency

(2) panhypopituitarism

(3) hypocorticolism

 

Infectious causes:

(1) viral hepatitis A (HAV)

(2) viral hepatitis B (HBV)

(3) hepatitis C virus (HCV)

(4) Herpes simplex virus (HSV)

(5) Human Herpes Virus (HHV) 6, 7, 8

(6) cytomegalovirus (CMV)

(7) enterovirus

(8) parvovirus

(9) rubella

(10) coxsackie virus

(11) adenovirus

(12) HIV

(13) syphilis

(14) toxoplasmosis

(15) bacterial infection

 

Cases can occur where the cause is not identified.
