Neglect of a geriatric patient may take many forms.


 

Activities of daily living:

(1) bathing and general hygiene

(2) handling of feces and urine

(3) hydration

(4) nutrition

(5) clothing and coverings

 

Health needs:

(1) dental needs

(2) medical needs

(3) therapy needs

(4) decubiti

(5) other wounds

 

Environmental needs:

(1) temperature control (warmth in winter, cooling in summer)

(2) safety and security (protection from falls, etc)

(3) dry

(4) air quality

 

Psychosocial needs:

(1) emotional support

(2) intellectual stimulation

(3) social interactions

 

Culpability in neglect depends on a number of factors:

(1) awareness and understanding

(2) capacity to provide

(3) manner of action (active vs passive)
