An event may be perceived as positive, negative or neutral. How it is perceived influences its impact.
Negativity bias: Something that is viewed or perceived as negative tends to have a greater (disproportionate) impact on a person when compared to neutral or positive events.
Negativity bias may exert an effect on:
(1) how one responds to an event or another person
(2) the motives attributed to another
(3) how much attention one spends on a topic
(4) self-esteem
Overlapping biases and mental states:
(1) pessimism
(2) depression
(3) paranoia
(4) catastrophizing
(5) stereotyping
