Description

Narcissus is a genus of flowers which can be toxic after exposure. Some people eat the bulbs because they expect a medicinal benefit.


Family: Amaryllidaceae

 

Species: Narcissus tazetta, Narcissus poeticus

 

Toxic parts are usually the bulb and flowers.

 

Toxin: alkaloids (narciclasine, narcipavline, narcikachnine, norylcoramine, other)

 

Toxicity: acetylcholine esterase inhibition, butyrylcholinesterase inhibition

 

Skin contact can result in an allergic contract dermatitis.

 

Ingestion can result in:

(1) nausea

(2) severe vomiting

(3) diarrhea and abdominal pain

(4) seizures

(5) other CNS toxicity

(6) death
