Description

The staging system for myeloma of the Third British Medical Research Council uses hemoglobin, BUN and performance status to separate patients into good, intermediate and poor prognostic groups.

Stage

Findings

A

hemoglobin > 10 g/dL (100 g/L)

blood urea nitrogen < 22 mg/dL (8 mmol/L)

minimal symptoms (Karnofsky 100)

B

not stage A or C

C

hemoglobin < 7.5 g/dL (75 g/L) and restricted activity (Karnofsky <= 70)

C

blood urea nitrogen > 28 mg/dL (10 mmol/L) and restricted activity (Karnofsky <= 70)

where:

• conversion of BUN from mg/dL to mmol/L is 0.357; from mmol/L to mg/dL is 2.80112

Stage

Prognosis

A

good

B

intermediate

C

poor
