Description

Mushroom workers' lung is a type of hypersensitivity pneumonitis seen in people growing mushrooms.


Risk factors of mushroom growing:

(1) warm, moist environment

(2) abundant organic material

 

Clinical features:

(1) worker at a mushroom farm

(2) chronic cough and/or dyspnea

(3) demonstration allergy to one or more antigens in the environment

(4) exclusion of other diagnoses

(5) improvement after removal from exposure

 

Mushrooms associated with allergic reactions:

(1) Agaricus

(2) Bunashimeji

(3) Hypsizigus marmoreus

(4) Lyophyllum

(5) Pholiota

(6) Pleurotus osteatus

(7) Poria megalopora

(8) Shitake (Shii-take; Lentinus edodes)

 

Other exposures include:

(1) fungi (Aspergillus, Alternaria, Fusarium, Mucor, Rhizopus, etc)

(2) yeast

(3) bacteria (thermophilic actinomycetes, Pseudomonas, etc)

(4) compost
