Description

A cholinergic agent may bind to muscarinic and nicotinic receptors. Muscarinic receptors are present in autonomic ganglia (parasympathetic), the central nervous system, the heart, smooth muscle, blood vessels and secretory glands.


Muscarinic effects:

(1) blurring of vision (effect on the ciliary body)

(2) miosis

(3) urinary frequency with incontinence

(4) bradycardia

(5) hypotension

(6) atrial fibrillation and/or ventricular tachycardia

(7) increased lacrimation

(8) rhinitis

(9) increased salivation

(10) increase sweating

(11) nausea and vomiting

(12) abdominal cramping

(13) diarrhea or fecal incontinence with tenesmus

(14) chest tightness

(15) wheezing and bronchospasm

(16) cough

(17) increased bronchial secretions

(18) dyspnea with or without cyanosis

 

The mnemonic SLUDGEM may be used:

(1) salivation (S)

(2) lacrimation (L)

(3) urinary frequency (U)

(4) diarrhea (D)

(5) gastrointestinal cramping (G)

(6) emesis (E)

(7) miosis (M)
