The morphology of myeloma at the time of diagnosis can be used to predict patient survival.
Morphologic categories of plasma cells in the bone marrow:
(1) mature plasma cells
(2) proplasmablasts
(3) plasmablasts
(4) lymphoplasmacytoid cells
Morphology |
Content |
mature |
more than 50% of plasma cells are mature |
proplasmablastic |
more than 50% of plasma cells are proplasmacytic |
plasmablastic |
more than 50% of plasma cells are plasmablasts |
mixed |
no category of plasma cell was more than 50% |
Since both the proplasmablastic and mixed types showed a similar prognosis, they were combined into an "immature" group.

Prognosis |

immature (proplasmablastic and plasmablastic) |
intermediate |
plasmablastic |

The presence of renal insufficiency also adversely affects survival.
estimated survival in months =
= 69.0 - (51.45 * (1 if plasmablastic type, else 0)) - (35.03 * (1 if immature subtype, else 0)) - (16.4 * (1 if renal insufficiency present, else 0))
