Description

Soto et al developed a score for describing the severity of disease in a patient with mucosal leishmaniasis. This can be used during the initial assessment and to monitor the patient over time. The authors are from multiple institutions in Columbia, Bolivia, Germany and the United States.

Sites examined:

(1) nasal skin

(2) nasal mucosa

(3) palate

(4) pharynx

(5) larynx

Pathologic signs graded at each site:

(1) erythema

(2) edema

(3) infiltration

(4) erosion (ulceration)

Finding

Grade

none

0

few or mild

1

moderate

2

3

subscore at each site =

= SUM(points for all 4 signs)

total score =

= SUM(subscores for all 5 sites)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 60

• The higher the score the more severe the disease.
