Description

Cozijnsen et al reported the mucosal inflammation noninvasive index (MINI) for pediatric patients with Crohn's disease. This provides a noninvasive method to determine the level of mucosal inflammation between endoscopic biopsies. The authors are from multiple institutions from around the world.

Patient selection: pediatric patient with Crohn's disease

Parameters:

(1) stool features

(2) fecal calprotectin in micrograms per gram stool

(3) ESR in mm/h and CRP in mg/L

Parameter

Finding

Points

stool

0 or 1 normal or liquid stools per day, no blood

0

2 to 5 liquid stools

4

0 to 2 semiformed with small amount of blood

4

>= 6 liquid

8

nocturnal diarrhea

8

gross bleeding

8

fecal calprotectin

< 50 µg/g

-3

ESR < 10 and CRP < 5

0

ESR from 10 to 29

1

ESR from 30 to 49

2

ESR >= 50

total score =

= SUM(points for all 3 parameters)

Interpretation:

minimum score: -3

maximum score: 25

The higher the score the greater the inflammation.

Score

Status

< 8

mucosal healing

8 to 11

mild inflammation

> 11

moderate to severe inflammation

Performance:

The area under the ROC curve to detect mucosal healing was 0.92.
