Description

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma can very rarely arise in the conjunctiva. This is an aggressive tumor which can invade ocular structures and recur if not completely excised.

The diagnosis is made by a biopsy showing a cancer with a mucoepidermoid pattern with epithelial and mucin-secreting cells. Mucin-secreting cells may have a glandular pattern or have signet ring cells.

Risk factors for poor outcome:

(1) delay in diagnosis

(2) failure to perform a wide, local excision

(3) positive resection margins
