Mpox (monkeypox) may result in complications necessitating hospitalization.
Risk factors for complications:
(1) HIV disease
(2) unvaccinated to mpox or smallpox
(3) severe infection
Complications may include:
(1) rectal pain, anal pain or proctitis (? anal receptive intercourse)
(2) encephalitis
(3) hepatitis
(4) secondary bacterial infection
(5) upper respiratory disease affecting swallowing or airways
(6) difficulty passing urine
(7) genital pain
(8) ocular pain
(9) diarrhea
(10) acute kidney injury
(11) dyspnea
(12) syncope
(13) extensive skin involvement
(14) rectal abscess or fistula
The patient may have other sexually-transmitted infections.
Mortality is uncommon.
