Description

There are several common types of motorcycle accidents, one of which is called a highsider.

Risk factors:

(1) excessive braking, with locking up of the rear wheel

(2) excessive engine braking

(3) applying too much throttle when exiting a corner

(4) loss of traction on the rear wheel (reduced surface friction)

(5) oversteering the bike into the turn

Accident sequence:

(1) loss of traction in the rear wheel causing slippage

(2) sudden restoration of traction with the wheels no longer aligned in the direction of travel

(3) creation of large torque, causing a sudden rotation of the bike around its long axis

(4) the rotation throws the rider over the handlebars or over the "high" side (upper side when leaning into a curve)

The type of injuries depend on what personal protective equipment is being worn.

Since the patient is thrown at high speed there is a risk of significant injury to:

(1) head

(2) neck

(3) limb
