Description

Lo et al evaluate mortality rates in elderly patients who have a had a hip fracture. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Fooyin University and Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

Patient selection: age > 60 years with hip fracture

Outcome: first year survival

Parameters:

(1) renal disease (renal failure in section 2.3 Covariates)

(2) age in years

(3) management (operative vs nonoperative)

(4) sex

(5) cardiovascular disease (hypertension, ischemic heart, cardiomyopathy, heart failure)

If the patient has renal disease, then the survival rate is 10%.

For patients without renal disease, the mortality rate is determined by the following table.
