Cote et al used the 6-minute walking distance (6MWD) and peak oxygen uptake (VO2) to evaluate patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). These can help to identify a patient who may have a worse prognosis. The authors are from Bay Pines Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Florida and St. Elizabeth's Medical Center in Boston.
Patient selection: COPD, age >= 58 years of age
Parameters from the multivariate analysis:
(1) Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) with odds ratio 1.3
(2) 6-minute walking distance in meters
(3) body mass index (BMI, prognosis worse if low)
Additional parameters:
(1) peak oxygen uptake as percent of predicted maximal (ATS/ACCP, 2003)
(2) FEV1 in liters (prognosis worse with lower percent of predicted)
