Hill et al developed an index for evaluating renal biopsies from a patient with lupus nephritis. One component is the Chronic Lesions Index (CI). The authors are from Hopitaux Broussais, St. Louis, Henri Mondor and Bichat in Paris.
Patient selection: lupus nephritis
Specimen: renal biopsy
Parameters:
(1) glomerulosclerosis (glscl)
(2) glomerular scars (gloscar)
(3) fibrous crescents (fibcres)
(4) tubular atrophy (tubatro)
(5) interstitial fibrosis(intfib)
Each parameter is scored based on its severity.
Severity
Points
none
0
mild
1
moderate
2
severe
3
chronic lesions index =
= SUM(points for all 5 parameters)
Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 15
• The higher the score the more severe the chronic lesions.
