Description

Lou et al reported a model for early death prediction in a patient with newly diagnosed acute promyelocytic leukemia. This is a modification of the Sanz risk model. The authors are from Zhejiang University and the Key Laboratory of Hematopoietic Malignancies in Hangzhou, China.

Patient selection: newly diagnosed acute promyelocytic leukemia (APML)

Early death: within 30 days of starting induction

Parameters:

(1) WBC count in 10^9/L

(2) platelet count in 10^9/L

(3) age in years

WBC to platelet ratio =

= (WBC count) / (platelet count)

Risk Group

Criteria

low

WBC <= 10 * 10^9/L AND platelet count > 40 * 10^9/L

intermediate

WBC to platelet ratio < 0.2 AND age <= 60 years AND not low risk

high

WBC to platelet ratio >= 0.2 OR age > 60 years AND not low or ultra-high

ultra-high

WBC > 50 * 10^9/L
