Description

Simon et al developed a modified Pediatric Trauma Score (mPTS) that can be used as a secondary triage score within a trauma center. The scores uses clinical findings to identify a subset of patients with a low probability of serious disease that do not need management by a full trauma team. The authors are from Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Parameters:

(1) airway

(2) open wound

(3) neurological status

where:

• Normal hemodynamics was a systolic blood pressure > 90 mm Hg and a palpable pulse at the wrist.

total score =

= SUM(points for all 5 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 5

• A low score indicates a higher chance of serious trauma.

• A score of 5 indicates a patient at low risk for serious injury. This patient can be managed without activation of the trauma team.

Performance:

• Nasr et al found that the score missed some children with significant intra-abdominal injuries.
