Description

Heyland et al developed the NUTrition RIsk in the Critically ill (NUTRIC) score to identify a patient in the intensive care unit (ICU) who may benefit from nutrition therapy. The modified NUTRIC (mNUTRIC) score is a simplification.

Patient selection: critically ill patient in the ICU

Change from NUTRIC: removal of IL-6 measurement

Parameters:

(1) age

(2) APACHE II score

(3) SOFA score

(4) number of comorbidities

(5) number of days between hospital admission and ICU admission

= SUM(points for all 5 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 9

• The higher the score the greater the mortality rate and duration of mechanical ventilation.

• The higher the score the more likely that the patient will benefit from aggressive nutritional support.

• For severe burn patients a score >= 5 is associated with worse outcomes.
