Modified Newton Classification for the Severity of Denture-Related Stomatitis

The severity of denture-related stomatitis can be classified based on a modification of Newton’s classification.

Patient selection: denture wearer

Parameters seen on examination of the palate in contact with dentures:

(1) petechiae

(2) erythema

(3) papillary hyperplasia

Differential diagnosis:

(1) Candida species

(2) bacterial infection

(3) allergic reaction

(4) other cause (drug, etc)
