Description

Jacobs et al reported models for predicting the outcome following traumatic brain injury (TBI). These can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive management. The authors are from Radboud University Nijmegen in The Netherlands.

Patient selection: traumatic brain injury, age > 16 years, rated moderate or severe (GCS < 13 after resuscitation)

Outcome: unfavorable by Glasgow Outcome Scale Extended at 6 months (death = GOSE 1; other GOSE 2 to 4)

Parameters:

(1) cisterns

(2) age in years

(3) number of abnormal pupils (0, 1 or 2)

(4) number of contusions

(5) hypotensive episode

(6) abnormal fourth ventricle

(7) dominant lesion (epidural hematoma EDH, subdural hemorrhage SDH, contusion)
