Description

Christianen et al developed several predictive models for swallowing dysfunction following chemoradiation for head and neck cancer. One model predicts problems while swallowing liquids. The authors are from University Medical Center Groningen and VU University Medical Center Amsterdam in The Netherlands.

Patient selection: head and neck cancer after chemoradiation

Outcome: problems swallowing liquids

Parameters:

(1) mean radiation dose to supraglottic larynx in Gray (Gy)

(2) radiation technique (3D-CRT vs IMRT)

Radiation Technique

Points

3D-CRT

0

IMRT

1

X =

= (0.074 * (mean dose to supraglottic larynx)) – (1.209 * (points for radiation technique)) – 5.98

probability of problems swallowing liquids =

= 1 / (1 + EXP((-1) * X))

Performance:

• The area under the ROC curve was 0.75.
