Models of Bostwick et al for Preoperative Prediction of Capsular Perforation and Seminal Vesicle Invasion in a Patient with Prostate Cancer

Bostwick et al developed 2 equations based on logistic regression models for predicting prostate cancer perforation of the prostatic capsule and invasion of the seminal vesicles. These can be helpful in planning patient management. The authors are from the Mayo Clinic.


 

Parameters:

(1) serum PSA in ng/mL

(2) percent prostate cancer in needle biopsies

 

C for capsular perforation =

= (0.028 * (percent prostate cancer in biopsy specimen)) + (0.85 * LN(PSA)) - 3.58

 

probability of capsular perforation =

= 1 / (1 + EXP((-1) *C))

 

S for seminal vesicle invasion =

= (0.026 * (percent prostate cancer in biopsy specimen)) + (0.54 * LN(PSA)) - 4.02

 

probability of seminal vesicle invasion =

= 1 / (1 + EXP((-1) *S))

 

where:

• The probability of capsular perforation should be higher than seminal vesicle invasion.
