Wong and Ngim developed an equation for estimating a burn patient's length of stay in the hospital. The authors are from Singapore General Hospital.
Patient selection: significant thermal burn, with most patients Asian
Complications: sepsis, ARDS, pneumonia, DIC, multiorgan failure
Parameters:
(1) percent of total body surface area that is burned (TBSA), from 1 to 100
(2) percent of body surface area with full thickness burn, from 0 to 100 and less than or equal to TBSA
(3) respiratory (inhalation) injury (0 if none, 1 if present)
(4) age in years
estimated length of stay in days =
= (0.93 * (percent TBSA)) + (3.2 * (percent full thickness BSA)) + (0.14 * (age in years)) + (6.97 * (points for respiratory injury)) + 1.9
