Description

Thankavel et al evaluated closure of a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in neonates <= 30 weeks gestation using echocardiography. These can help to identify a neonate who may require an intervention. The authors are from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and Children's Medical Center of Dallas.

Patient selection: premature infant <= 30 weeks gestation with PDA

Testing: echocardiography on postnatal day 3

Parameters:

(1) diameter of PDA in mm

(2) diameter of left pulmonary artery (LPA)

(3) gestational age in weeks

ratio of PDA to LPA =

= (PDA diameter) / (LPA diameter)

The PDA was considered moderate or large if the ratio was >= 0.5.
