Description

Tanaskovic et al evaluated patients for early restenosis after eversion endarterectomy. A high risk patient may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Dedinje Cardiovascular Institute, University of Belgrade, Clinical Centre of Serbia Belgrade and the University of Zurich.

Patient selection: eversion carotid endarterectomy

Outcome: restenosis within 1 year

Risk factors for carotid restenosis:

(1) elevated high sensitivity CRP 6 hours prior to endarterectomy

(2) elevated fibrinogen 48 hours after surgery

(3) not taking aspirin on discharge

(4) female gender

score 1 = risk for restenosis within 1 year =

= (17.264 * (points for aspirin)) + (2.841 * (points for fibrinogen)) - 7.631

score 2 = either no restenosis or restenosis after 1 year =

= (25.59 * (points for aspirin)) + (1.165 * (points for fibrinogen)) - 13.33

Interpretation:

• The higher of the 2 scores identifies the group to which the patient belongs.
