Nickel et al studied the association of mobility and vital signs with in-hospital mortality. This can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from multiple institutions in Switzerland, Denmark and Uganda.
Patient selection: acutely ill in-patient
Outcome: in-hospital mortality. Also reported 30-day and 100-day mortalities which were higher.
Parameters:
(1) National Early Warning Score NEWS (from 0 to 20, as measure of vital signs)
(2) mobility

Interpretation:
• A low risk population is identified.
• The outcome for the high-risk group varied with the institution. The highest mortality (13.8%) was seen with the hospital in Uganda. The European hospitals showed a range from 3.1 to 8%.
