Description

Eberhart et al developed a model for predicting postoperative vomiting (PV) in a pediatric patient. This can help identify a patient who may benefit from closer monitoring and preventive measures. The authors are from Philipps University (Marburg), University of Wurzburg, and the Ambulatory Surgical Center Soflingen (Ulm) in Germany.

Parameters:

(1) type of surgery

(2) age of the patient

(3) duration of surgery

(4) history of postoperative vomiting (PV) or nausea and vomiting (PONV)

Interventions:

(1) trying to shorten the duration of the procedure

(2) selection of a pain medicine that is less emetogenic

(3) use of a prophylactic drug to reduce nausea and/or vomiting
