Description

Broeker et al developed models for children, adolescents and adults with acute appendicitis. These can help determine the probability of perforation. The authors are from Reinier de Graaf Groep, Erasmus MC, University Medical Center Rotterdam and University Hospital Maastricht in The Netherlands.

Patient selection: acute appendicitis (children, adolescents, adults up to 54 years)

Outcome: perforation

Parameters:

(1) CRP in mg/L

(2) days with abdominal pain

X =

= (0.207 * (days with abdominal pain)) + (0.012 * (CRP)) - 2.788

probability of perforation based on surgeon's diagnosis =

= 1 / (1 + EXP((-1) * X))

Y =

= (0.294 * (days with abdominal pain)) + (0.014 * (CRP)) - 4.054

probability of perforation based on histologic findings =

= 1 / (1 + EXP((-1) * Y))
