Description

Echinococcosis may be misdiagnosed if clinicians and radiologists are unfamiliar with it and its mimics.


Risk factors for misdiagnosis:

(1) prevalence in the community

(2) narrow differential diagnosis

(3) patient's exposure history

 

Cystic lesions that may be misdiagnosed as ecchinococosis:

(1) cystic schwannoma

(2) cystic degeneration in an embryonal sarcoma

(3) benign cystic tumors

 

Ecchinococcosis may be misdiagnosed, especially in extrahepatic sites:

(1) cystic ovarian tumor

(2) tuberculosis

(3) metastatic cancer (see pseudo-malignant hydatid disease)

(4) bone tumor

(5) intrathoracic tumor
