Description

Capnocytophaga is a Gram-negative anaerobic bacillus that is present in the mouths of many mammals. While sepsis and bloodstream infections are the most common infection, other sites have been reported in the literature.


Miscellaneous infections caused by Capnocytophaga species include:

(1) osteomyelitis

(2) meningitis or brain abscess

(3) gingivitis

(4) pneumonia with or without empyema

(5) conjunctivitis or keratitis

(6) blebitis (in a patient treated for glaucoma)

(7) periprosthetic joint infection

(8) cellulitis

(9) septic arthritis

(10) peritonitis
