Description

Some women may develop migraine headaches in association with oral contraception therapy.

Clinical features:

(1) A woman has the onset or worsening of migraine headaches after starting an oral contraceptive.

(2) The migraine improves or disappears after the implicated oral contraceptive is discontinued.

(3) No other explanation can explain these findings better.

Most women with migraine associated with oral contraceptive are taking a continuous combined oral contraceptive. An alternative means of contraception should be considered. Some women have a significant reduction in migraine with a progestogen-only oral contraceptive. Other women respond to frovatriptan.
