Micromegakaryocytes can circulate in the peripheral blood where they can cause confusion. Rarely they can be encountered in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).
Micromegakaryocytes may be missed if they are present in small numbers.
Presentation:
(1) abnormal population of cells in an automated count
(2) unidentified cells in a peripheral smear count
Conditions associated with micromegakaryocytes in the peripheral blood include:
(1) myelodysplasia
(2) myeloproliferative neoplasm
(3) AML
(4) rarely ALL
(5) eryrthroleukemia
Immunohistochemistry - positive for:
(1) CD41
(2) CD42b
(3) Factor VIII antigen
(4) CD4
(5) CD61
(6) CD31
(7) variable CD34
Differential diagnosis:
(1) micromyeloblasts
(2) lymphocytes
