Description

Govindan et al reported the MI-PICC score for patients with a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC). This can help to identify a patient at increased risk for complications in the ICU. The authors are from the University of Kansas, University of Michigan, the University of Colorado and the VA.

Patient selection: PICC line in place <= 21 days

Outcome: catheter-associated bloodstream infection, venous thromboembolism

Parameter:

(1) history of deep vein thrombosis (DVT)

(2) active cancer

(3) another central venous catheter present

(4) blood transfusion

(5) number of days with PICC in place

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 11

• The odds ratio for complications increases 1.45 for each point increase.

Performance:

• The area under the ROC curve is 0.72 to 074.
