The drug is chemical related to ketamine and phencyclidine. It is a dissociative anesthetic and inhibits several receptors.
Routes of abuse: snorting, sublingual, injection (IV, IM), rectal
The user often seeks a recreational high. Additional psychic effects may include:
(1) hallucinations, psychedelic experience
(2) depersonalization
(3) dissociation of the physical body
(4) antidepressant effect
(5) psychosis
Adverse physical effects:
(1) tachycardia
(2) hypertension
(3) ataxia
(4) agitation
(5) confusion, stupor or coma
(6) nystagmus
(7) mydriasis
(8) sweating
(9) loss or coordination
(10) nausea and vomiting
(11) diarrhea
Repeated use can result in tolerance.
Death can occur with excessive doses, with comorbid conditions and mixed abuse.
Management is usually symptomatic. Small doses of benzodiazepines may be helpful. Drug abuse and psychiatric evaluation may be indicated.
