Description

Bed bugs are hardy and relatively long-lived. Eradication of an infestation requires a careful and thorough plan.


 

Environmental cleaning:

(1) Carefully vacuum and clean all surfaces.

(2) Clean all rugs and remove if possible.

(3) Clean all luggage and remove if possible.

 

Treating of clothing and bed linens:

(1) Wash items in soap and hot water and then dry at high temperature (above 99°F, preferably above 122°F/50°C).

(2) Alternatively cool to below 48°F, or freeze.

(3) Change pajamas and bed linens daily.

(4) Do not leave clothes laying about. Seal clothing in plastic bags.

 

Treating of beds, mattresses and pillows

(1) Replace substandard mattresses with structural defects.

(2) Steam clean and vacuum mattresses.

(3) Repair and treat all furniture with upholstery.

(4) Place the legs of the bed in containers holding soapy water, in glass jars or metal cans.

(5) Coat the legs of the bed with petroleum jelly.

(6) Place the legs of the bed on fly paper, or wrap the legs with sticky tape.

 

Sealing and treating the environment:

(1) Caulk or seal any cracks in the wall, around pipes or conduits, floor boards.

(2) Repair any loose wallpaper.

(3) Place socket protectors into electrical outlets.

(4) Clean or remove pictures, posters and wall hangings.

(5) Consider use of an insecticide if the infestation is heavy or resistant to simple measures. This should only be applied by someone who has been properly trained in its safe use.

 

Additional factors:

(1) Application of an insect repellents such as DEET.

(2) Personal cleanliness.
