Stafford et al reported a method for estimating blood loss during delivery. The authors are from Louisiana State University, University of Utah, and Hospital Corporation of America.
Patient selection: female in the immediate post-partum period
Components:
(1) estimated blood volume of a pregnant woman
(2) estimated blood loss based on change in hematocrit
estimated blood volume in mL =
= 0.75 * ((50 * (maternal height in inches)) + (25 * (weight in pounds)))
estimated blood loss in percent =
= ((hematocrit prior to delivery in percent) - (hematocrit after delivery in percent)) / (hematocrit prior to delivery)
estimated blood loss in mL =
= (estimated blood volume in mL) * (estimated blood loss in percent)
