Application of a medicated cream or ointment should be done carefully to maximize benefit and to minimize risk.
General application:
(1) Thoroughly clean the affected area with soap and water, then dry by patting with a soft cloth, unless instructed otherwise.
(2) Do not overapply. Apply a thin layer of medication to the affected area, then spread evenly with the fingertips using gentle pressure. Rub the material in until it disappears.
(3) In general be careful when applying the topical agent around the eyes, mouth or nose. The material should not be ingested.
(4) Unless instructed otherwise, an occlusive dressing or tight clothing should not be applied. An occlusive dressing may enhance systemic absorption of the topical agent.
(5) Unless instructed otherwise, other topical agents should not be applied in the same area at the same time.
(6) After application the hands should be washed thoroughly.
(7) Do not bathe, shower or swim after application of the topical agent.
Instructions in special circumstances:
(1) With communicable diseases (herpes simplex virus vesicles, etc.) the finger applying the preparation should be covered with a finger cot or glove to prevent spread.
(2) A light covering may reduce protect the surface from excessive contact or environmental contamination.
(3) A topical agent with systemic absorption may be contraindicated in a woman who is pregnant or breast feeding.
Patient instruction:
(1) The treated area should be watched for development of a skin rash or other skin reaction that might indicate an allergic response.
(2) Do not use the preparation for any condition other than that for it was prescribed.
(3) A preparation requiring a prescription should not be shared with others.
