Description

Meteotsunami (meteorological tsunami) is a tsunami caused by a change in atmospheric conditions.

Trigger: sudden and rapid change in barometric pressure, possibly with influence of the wind

They tend to occur in certain locations where local conditions are conducive to their formation (long and narrow bay, etc).

The wave height can be up to 6 meters.

The waves tend to be short lived, as opposed to recurrent wave trains seen with typical tsunamis.

The diagnosis requires exclusion of other causes for a wave:

(1) earthquake with underwater landslide

(2) seiche wave

(3) tide.
