Bello-Chavolla et al reported the Metabolic Score for Insulin Resistance (METS-IR)). This measure does not depend on insulin levels. The authors are from multiple institutions in Mexico and Sechenov University in Moscow.
Parameters:
(1) fasting plasma glucose (FPG) in mg/dL
(2) serum triglycerides (TG) in mg/dL
(3) body mass index in kg per sq m (BMI), based on height and weight
(4) serum HDL cholesterol in mg/dL (HDLC)
METS-IR =
= (X/Y)
X =
= LN((2*FPG)+TG) * BMI
Y =
= LN(HDLC)
Interpretation:
• METS-IR correlates with visceral fat and fasting insulin levels.
• A high METS-IR is associated with type 2 diabetes.
