Description

The majority of patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) have the metabolic syndrome. This subgroup has been designated metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD).


NOTE: The designation of NAFLD is for any cause of fatty liver disease other than alcohol. While MAFLD is the most common cause, other diseases may also cause steatohepatitis. Thus MAFLD is not synonymous with NAFLD.

 

Criteria for the diagnosis of MAFLD:

(1) hepatic steatosis (by histology, by intrahepatic triglyceride content >= 5%)

(2) presence of one or more metabolic conditions (obesity, diabetes, metabolic dysregulation)

(3) exclusion of other causes of fatty liver disease (especially alcohol
