Description

Mesocestoidiasis is a cestode infection that may rarely affect humans.


 

Genus: Mesocestoides

 

Distribution: worldwide

 

The life cycle involves 3 hosts:

(1) arthropod (consumes eggs released in feces)

(2) vertebrate intermediate host, including chickens

(3) carnivore, including humans

 

Risk factor for infection:

(1) eating raw or undercooked meat or viscera

 

Symptoms may include:

(1) loss of appetite

(2) abdominal pain or discomfort

(3) anemia

 

Diagnosis is made by identification of the egg or proglottids in the feces.
