A Merkin is a wig for the pubic region and may be worn by men or women.
Indications for wearing a Merkin:
(1) control pubic lice (in conjunction with shaving of the genital area)
(2) mask signs of syphilis, genital injury or other lesion
(3) mask genitalia for an actor (the presence of a merkin can avoid the designation of "full frontal nudity")
(4) device for sexual provocation
(5) generalized alopecia from illness or therapy (in conjunction with wigs elsewhere)
