Description

One manifestation of hereditary pancreatitis may be occurrence of pancreatitis during menstruation.


Clinical features:

(1) family history of acute pancreatitis

(2) female sex

(3) recurrent episodes of abdominal pain during menstrual period

(4) the onset is often during adolescence after menarche

(5) biochemical evidence of acute pancreatitis

(6) exclusion of other causes of recurrent abdominal pain (irritable bowel, menstrual cramps, etc)

(7) improvement with hormonal ovarian suppression

 

The diagnosis supported if a genetic mutation associated with hereditary pancreatitis can be demonstrated (PRSS1, SPINK1, CFTR, CPA1, CTRC and others)..
