Meningitis has been reported in children receiving the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine.
Patient selection: child receiving the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine.
The vaccination is usually 1-4 weeks prior to onset.
Risk factors for meningitis:
(1) vaccines containing certain viral strains
The meningitis may be:
(1) vaccine-related mumps meningitis (molecular techniques identify the vaccine strain)
(2) aseptic meningitis
The diagnosis requires exclusion of other diagnoses such as:
(1) aseptic meningitis due to another cause
(2) viral meningitis unrelated to the vaccine
